“Thank you all so much and have a fantastic night!” Savannah announced to her audience after the night’s show.
Katie and I made our way backstage afterwards. She had been blown away by the performances of all of the drag queens and the elaborate costumes, especially Savannah’s showstopper, Miss Althea. Miss Althea had been performing at Savannah’s for almost twenty years. I knew better than to remind her of that since she felt it would date her.
As soon as we made it behind the curtain, amongst the scattering performers, I heard a deep voice bellow, “Well, look a there!”
I recognized the voice immediately.
Katie and I turned around to see the spectacular sight that is Miss Althea. Despite being, I guess, well close to sixty, her cocoa skin was as smooth as the last time I had seen her years ago. She wore a huge bright green ball gown and carried a silver parasol.
“Miss Althea!” I exclaimed.
She ran up and playfully slapped me across the arm with her parasol.
“Well ain’t you just getting handsomer by the years! Um, um, um!”
She looked me over from the top of my head down to my shoes.
“Thank you,” I said.
Her attention turned to Katie.
“And who is this sweet child with the cotton candy hair?”
“Katie,” Katie said. “I loved your rendition of “Endless Love.”
“Your friend has nice taste,” Miss Althea said to me. “Miss Katie, I hope to get to know you better while you’re visiting our beautiful city.”
“I’d love that,” Katie said.
“There you are! I see you already found Althea,” Savannah said, walking up and putting her arms around both Katie and me.
“She’s always hard to miss,” I said.
“You got that right!” Miss Althea said. She turned her attention back to me. “Where’s your huzzband you were supposed to be bringing?”
An uncomfortable tension overwhelmed the room. I could feel both Katie and Savannah’s eyes on me…both of them not sure what to say.
All of those feelings of hurt and disappointment washed back over me like a large violent wave crashing on a peaceful beach.
I tried to shrug it off. “Long story, but he’s not in the picture anymore.”
“Oh, Miss Althea just stuck her well-pedicured foot in her mouth! I’m so sorry.”
“No, biggie,” I said. I tried to smile, but it was a sorry ass attempt.
Awkward silence.
“Well, this girl has to go take care of some bizzness. Too much chicory coffee before the show.”
And with that Miss Althea scurried off.
“Who’s hungry?” Savannah asked.
I raised my hand.
“Me, too. Starved,” Katie said.
“I think a trip out for dinner is in order!” Savannah announced.
